What am I working on now?
By Coach Chris
Inspired by Derek Sivers talking about his idea of a 'Now Page,’ I thought it would be fun to let you know what I am up to right now…
Ironman: I have just completed two Ironman triathlons in 7 weeks. An Ironman is a 3.8km swim, 180km bike ride and 42.2km run. The first event was up in Cairns on 9 June and then I headed over to the land of cheese, chocolate and yodelling, Switzerland, for the second event in Zurich on 28 July. After those two, and a bit of rest, I have just started training for my first ever New York marathon, raising money for Artolution, in November.
Wings for Life World Run: Aside from the mass of training that goes with trying to complete these events, I recently worked on this years Wings for Life World Run with Red Bull. The Melbourne event was a sell out success and around the globe, we raised millions of dollars for spinal cord injury research. My role was to manage the amazing Wings for Life Ambassadors, several of whom have spinal cord injuries themselves, and help promote the run to local health organisations and running clubs around Melbourne.
Charity Coaching: I have recently helped the Baker Heart and Diabetes Institute to prepare their fundraisers for their Run Melbourne Campaign. Runners took part in the 5km, 10km or half marathon runs on 28 July and I wrote the coaching materials and organised coaching sessions to help them prepare.
Momentum through Sport: I am in the process of launching a not for profit organisation in collaboration with my good friend and fellow coach, Michael Harvey. 'Momentum through Sport’ will use the power of sport to help kids gain momentum in their lives.
Online Learning for Runners: I been convinced for ages that I can add something useful to help runners through online learning. Im not going to lie, I have struggled to articulate this but I think the idea is coming together now. I would love to chat to other people who are interested in this idea…
Being Coached: Yes… despite being a coach, I do not know everything and I still struggle with accountability (gasp!) I have asked the excellent Michael Harvey from Momentum Endurance Coaching to coach me for my two Ironman triathlons in 2019 and am working on my running efficiency with Paul MacKinnon aka The Balanced Runner. These guys are both great at what they do and I can highly recommend them both.
‘The Sunday Long Run’ weekly email: Again, something I’ve been meaning to do for ages kicked off earlier this year and I am enjoying bringing each weekly version together. I hope it can be something light, fresh and for you to ponder each week on your long run (or even better, with a coffee afterwards!) . You can sign up for it below…
